Aspiring for stronger communities and a fairer future.
About Tower Hamlets
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a vibrant and historically rich area in East London, renowned for its resilience, diversity, and cultural heritage. Once at the heart of London’s maritime and industrial past—home to the historic Docklands and East India Docks—Tower Hamlets has played a vital role in shaping the capital’s identity for centuries.
Today, the borough is one of the most diverse communities in the UK, with a proud blend of cultures, faiths, and backgrounds. It is especially home to a large British Bangladeshi population, alongside communities from across the globe. This rich diversity is reflected in the borough’s schools, businesses, arts, and public life.
Tower Hamlets has made great strides in education, housing, and regeneration, with landmarks like Canary Wharf symbolising its global economic importance, while areas like Whitechapel and Brick Lane showcase its cultural soul. Despite facing challenges such as poverty, overcrowding, and inequality, the borough remains a place of opportunity, driven by strong community spirit and local activism.
Politically, Tower Hamlets has long been a centre of engaged, passionate local politics. The borough has seen shifts in leadership, the emergence of grassroots movements, and dynamic political participation that reflects the high level of civic awareness among its residents.
Tower Hamlets stands as a borough of contrast and promise—where history meets modern ambition, and where communities continue to shape a better future, together.
We believe every child deserves the best start, every family deserves security and every neighbourhood deserves investment. Our policies are shaped through door-step conversations, residents’ assemblies and the lived experience of our councillors, almost all of whom grew up or live in the borough. We are proudly independent, but we work with anyone—civic society, trade unions, faith groups and businesses—who shares our ambition: to make Tower Hamlets the fairest, greenest and most opportunity-rich place in London to live, learn and work.
The story
Aspire is the local party of government in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Founded by long-time community campaigners, we are a movement rooted in the East End’s proud tradition of solidarity, diversity and social justice. Under Mayor Lutfur Rahman—re-elected in May 2022 with a clear popular mandate—we won a majority on Tower Hamlets Council (24 of 45 seats) and formed an administration committed to tackling poverty, reversing austerity and giving residents a bigger say in the future of their borough.
